Buying art as a gift is one of the most meaningful things you can give someone. Unlike flowers that fade or chocolates that disappear, a painting stays. It becomes part of someone's home, their mornings, their daily life.

But it can feel risky. Art is personal. What if they don't love it?

Here's how to get it right.

Start with their space, not their tastes

The most common mistake is buying what you love. But art lives in someone else's home. Think about:

What's on their walls already? What colours and styles do they lean toward?

Do they have a specific room in mind — a living room with neutral tones, a bedroom that needs calm?

How big is the wall space they have available?

If you're not sure, ask — or buy something with a return policy.

Size matters more than you think

A small painting on a large empty wall looks lost. A large painting in a small flat can feel overwhelming. When in doubt, go slightly larger than you think — a piece that fills a space confidently is almost always better than one that looks afterthought.

Standard painting sizes (A4, A3, half-imperial) are popular as gifts because they're easy to frame. Many buyers also love original paintings that come ready to hang.

Original vs print — which is the better gift?

Both can be wonderful. Here's the difference:

Original paintings are unique — there is only one. They hold emotional value and can appreciate over time. They're typically more expensive, but the gift feels genuinely special.

Prints are more affordable and still beautiful. A high-quality giclée print on cotton paper looks nearly identical to an original. If budget is a concern, a print is still a meaningful gift.

I offer both — you can find originals and prints at simonrobinstephensart.com/gallery.

Think about what the image says

The most loved art gifts tend to have a personal connection:

A painting of a place they love — their hometown, a favourite walk, a holiday memory

Something that reflects who they are — a gardener might love florals, a therapy practitioner might want something calming

Art that matches a life moment — a new home, a birthday milestone, a wedding anniversary

This is where a commission can be the most meaningful gift of all. I can paint a specific location or subject — something that no one else has, painted just for them.

What about framing?

Framing a painting before gifting it looks beautiful, but it risks the frame not matching the recipient's home. I'd suggest buying the painting unframed, then including a note about framing — or choosing a frame together.

If you want to gift it framed, simple white or natural oak frames are the most versatile choices.

Gift wrapping and delivery

All my paintings come wrapped with care, in acid-free tissue and robust packaging. I'm also happy to include a personal handwritten message — just let me know when you order.

When you're not sure

I offer gift vouchers. If you know someone would love an original piece but you're not certain which one, a gift voucher lets them choose for themselves — while still receiving the thoughtful gesture of "I thought of you."

Get in touch at hello@simonrobinstephensart.com and I'll sort something out.
