Watercolour Paintings as Wedding Gifts — A Truly Personal Touch

3 min read

Looking for a unique, lasting wedding gift? A commissioned watercolour of the couple's home, wedding venue, or favourite landscape is one of the most personal presents you can give.

When it comes to wedding gifts, most people reach for the gift list. But if you want to give something that will hang on the wall for decades — something the couple will look at every day and smile — a commissioned watercolour painting is in a class of its own.

Why Watercolour Makes Such a Beautiful Wedding Gift

Watercolour has a softness and luminosity that photographs simply cannot replicate. The way the pigment blooms and bleeds gives each painting a warmth and life that feels genuinely handmade — because it is. Unlike a print or a photo book, a watercolour commission is a one-of-a-kind artwork that cannot be replicated.

Over the years I've painted wedding venues the morning after the reception, childhood homes where the couple grew up, the canal towpath where they had their first date, and the cottage where they spent their honeymoon. Each one tells a story specific to that couple alone.

What Makes a Great Wedding Gift Commission?

The most treasured wedding gift paintings I've created tend to be:

  • Their home — especially the first home they shared together, or where they live now
  • The wedding venue — the church, barn, country house or registry office captured in watercolour makes an extraordinary keepsake
  • A meaningful landscape — where they got engaged, a favourite walking spot, a place they return to each anniversary
  • Florals from the wedding — the bouquet, the table centrepieces, the wildflowers from the meadow

Planning a Commission in Time for the Wedding

Good planning makes all the difference. I recommend getting in touch at least 6–8 weeks before the wedding date to ensure plenty of time for the painting, any revisions, framing, and postage.

That said, if you're reading this close to the date, don't panic — I'll always try to help where I can, and a beautifully hand-written card promising the commission can itself be a lovely part of the gift.

What I Need to Get Started

The process is simpler than you might think:

  1. A good photograph of the subject (I'll let you know if I need more angles or details)
  2. Your preferred size — from a small 20×15cm keepsake up to a large 50×40cm statement piece
  3. Any colour preferences or elements you'd particularly like included

I paint in a loose, atmospheric style that captures mood and light rather than architectural precision — which tends to suit wedding commissions especially well. Buildings feel warm and inviting; gardens glow with an impressionistic haze.

Pricing

Commission prices start from £180 for a small original watercolour (unframed). Larger pieces and framed options are available. I can also supply a high-quality print alongside the original, which works well when there are multiple gift-givers contributing.

Every commission comes with a certificate of authenticity and, if you wish, a short hand-written card from me explaining the painting — a lovely extra touch for the gift bag.

A Note About Surprises

Most wedding gift commissions are surprises for the couple, ordered by a parent, sibling, or close friend. I'm very used to this — all correspondence and packaging is completely discreet, and I'll work with you on timing so the painting arrives safely before the big day.

If you'd like to discuss a wedding commission, get in touch here — I'd love to hear about the couple and what makes their story unique.
