How to Frame Watercolour Art for Your Home

A well-framed watercolour can transform a room. A poorly framed one can slowly destroy the painting. Here is everything you need to know to frame original watercolour art properly — whether you're framing a painting you've bought or a print you love.

Why Framing Matters for Watercolour

Unlike oil paintings on canvas, watercolour is painted on paper — and paper is vulnerable. Good framing protects against UV light, humidity, acidic materials, and physical contact. It's not just aesthetic — it's preservation.

Conservation Mat Board

Always use acid-free, conservation-grade mat board. Standard card mat board contains lignin, which oxidises over time and produces acids that migrate into the artwork, causing irreversible yellowing. Museum-quality mat board is pH neutral and buffered — it actively protects the paper.

UV-Filtering Glass

UV-filtering conservation glass blocks 97–99% of UV radiation. Standard glass offers almost no UV protection. Without it, watercolour pigments will fade noticeably within a few years of exposure to normal indoor light.

The Mat as Spacer

The mat board serves two purposes: it provides the visual border and, crucially, it creates the gap that prevents glass from touching the painted surface. Glass in direct contact with watercolour paper can cause irreversible sticking. The mat is not optional — it is structurally essential.

DIY vs Professional Framing

For prints and less valuable works, DIY framing with conservation materials is entirely reasonable. For original watercolours, I recommend using a professional conservation framer. They will mount the artwork reversibly using Japanese tissue hinges — the artwork can be removed in future without damage.

Hanging and Placement

Even perfectly framed watercolour can be damaged by poor placement. Avoid direct sunlight, high-humidity rooms, and exterior walls in damp climates. North-facing walls tend to provide the most stable, consistent light.

A well-framed watercolour, hung correctly, should last for generations without degradation.
