A personal guide to finding art, inspiration, and beauty in South London — from gallery visits and open studios to painting spots that have inspired my own watercolour practice.

London Art Walks: Discovering Art in South London

South London has a quiet, underappreciated art scene that I have spent years exploring. As a watercolour artist based in Carshalton, I find inspiration around every corner — in the heritage ponds, the Victorian streets, the community arts centres, and the hidden gallery spaces scattered across the borough.

Why South London Is an Artist's Paradise

While north London gets much of the cultural attention, south of the river offers something different: a more human scale, genuine community, and a landscape that shifts dramatically between industrial heritage, leafy suburbia, and open countryside. For me, painting is deeply tied to place. South London's particular light — the way it filters through horse chestnut trees onto the Carshalton ponds, or catches the copper-red brickwork of Victorian terraces at dusk — has shaped my entire practice.

My Favourite Art Walk: Carshalton Village

Start at Carshalton Ponds — a genuinely beautiful stretch of water in the heart of the village. The ponds are spring-fed and have a quality of stillness that changes throughout the day. Early morning light in winter turns the water silver; late afternoon in autumn sets it bronze. From the ponds, walk through The Grove — a landscaped garden with mature trees and a restored water tower.

Art Spaces to Visit

Horton Arts Centre, Epsom — A working arts centre with a proper gallery programme. Simon's group exhibits here annually. Worth visiting for the building as much as the art — a beautifully converted Victorian asylum chapel.

All Saints Church Hall, Carshalton — Hosts the Carshalton Artists Christmas Art Fair each November. More than 20 local artists show original work, prints, and gifts in a convivial community setting.

Open Studios: The Best Way to Find New Art

Carshalton Arts Open Studios (CAOS) happens each June and is the highlight of the local arts calendar. It's free to visit, and you can walk directly into artists' working studios — an experience you can't replicate in a commercial gallery. Seeing art in the space where it was made changes how you see it.

Further Afield

If you're willing to travel 30–40 minutes from Carshalton, Box Hill and the Surrey Hills open up entirely. The North Downs provide elevated landscape views that have attracted painters since the eighteenth century. The River Wey through Guildford is particularly beautiful in spring and autumn.
