A Buckland Lake watercolour capturing the dramatic moment when storm clouds part and luminous yellow light floods distant Surrey fields. Painted on 100% cotton paper with professional-grade watercolours, this piece expresses the quiet resilience found after emotional weather.
I painted this piece using layered watercolour washes. The dark foreground branches frame the view like emotional containment. The luminous yellow glow in the distance acts as a focal point - a small promise that light always returns. Watercolour allows transparency. That glow makes the painting feel alive. There are moments when Surrey countryside holds its breath. Storm clouds press low. The air stills. Water turns slate-grey. Then without warning light breaks through. This is what happened at Buckland Lake, near Dorking. After a heavy morning, the clouds began to shift. Not dramatically. Not theatrically. Just a small tear in the grey. And through that gap, a single shaft of yellow light flooded the distant fields. It felt like watching emotion externalised: darkness holding, then suddenly releasing. For someone navigating ADHD, this visual metaphor resonates deeply. My thoughts often move like weather systems: turbulent, then calm, then turbulent again. Standing at the lake that day, I saw my internal landscape reflected outward: storm weight balanced by sudden hope.
